Captain Marvel Trailer - Returning Home?

Marvel is finally ready to launch a movie with a female lead in the form of Captain Marvel, and to lay the groundwork and get people hyped, have released their first trailer. What, if anything, can we glean from the this brief glimpse at the studio's newest super-heroine? What kind of person does the trailer reveal to us? Come along, and let's find out.

Possible spoilers ahead, I guess.

Okay, the first thing I want to note is that the good captain doesn't seem to be herself for the majority of the trailer. Judging from the trailer, she seems to start the film working for the Kree, a faction that are typically villainous in Marvel stories. Yet, she also states (presumably to Nick Fury), “I think I had a life here”, indicating that she was originally from Earth; which we could already guess, admittedly.

Indeed in part of the trailer we see Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel's civilian identity), climbing into a fighter jet; and later, laying in the ground after what looks to be a crash. Further, at one point we see her hooked up to some kind of machine, which is pumping energy into her head, perhaps messing with her mind?

This would suggest that she will start the film fighting for the Kree, but not necessarily of her own free will. Her arrival on Earth might trigger some of her old memories, and have her turn against her masters as she remembers her old self, and learns just what the Kree have done to her. This could explain the change from the green and black suit, to the red and blue that will be more familiar to comic book readers.

This theory seems plausible to me, as it would serve as a loose adaptation of one of Ms Danver's earliest stories; wherein Carol gained the memories of a Kree, and developed a split personality based on them. Obviously, the big screen version may be a little more grounded, for a given definition of “grounded”, but it would follow the trend of Marvel loosely adapting their comic storylines for their films.

This would also makes this a very personal journey of a woman rediscovering herself, as well as a blowout, superhero blockbuster.

However, why would the Kree send Carol to Earth? Why send her back to the planet where people may recognise her? Was her mission to punch old ladies?

Well, the answer may be with some of the aliens we see in the trailer. These are a race of aliens known as the Skrulls, another villainous faction, and one that are almost always depicted as being at war with the Kree. The thing about the Skrulls is that they're shape-shifters, able to disguise themselves as almost anyone, rather like Mystique from the X-Men franchise. Naturally, one of the Skrulls' favourite places to hide out is Earth.

It's entirely possible that the Kree sent Carol to Earth to hunt for Skrulls, and that would make this something of a infiltration, and subterfuge mission. In such a scenario the Kree would want an agent who would be able to blend in with the local populace, in order to avoid arousing any suspicion, and who better than their own human operative? That would probably mean that the old lady Carol punches in the trailer is probably a Skrull, and the good captain doesn't just beat on old people for fun.

Finally, yes I am aware that Captain Marvel is set in the nineties, and yes I was amused that they used Blockbuster as a means of conveying that face. But man, seeing Blockbuster Video being presented as a relic of the past certainly makes one aware of the passage of time.

Yet more questions remain unanswered; if Carol came back to Earth in the nineties, then where has she been in the years since? Has she been in contact with SHIELD ever since, or was it only Nick Fury who could contact her. Most importantly, will we finally learn how Nick Fury lost his eye?

Until next time,

PhoenixAct.
